The Stegosaurus, often dubbed the "Roof Lizard," was a massive herbivorous dinosaur from the Late Jurassic period. Recognized for its distinctive double row of large, bony plates along its back, it resembled a prehistoric armored tank. Its plates, called osteoderms, served various purposes, from temperature regulation to display during mating or intimidation. The Stegosaurus also featured formidable spikes on its tail, known as the "thagomizer," which served as a defense against predators. Despite its intimidating appearance, the Stegosaurus was a gentle giant, peacefully coexisting with other herbivorous dinosaurs like the Apatosaurus and the Brachiosaurus. These herbivores thrived in the lush ancient forests, using their massive size to reach vegetation high in trees, creating a unique ecosystem in the Jurassic era.
