The Lake Trout, affectionately known as "Laker," is a freshwater char living mainly in North American lakes. Scientifically named Salvelinus namaycush, it's closely related to other chars like Brook Trout and Arctic Char. Native to Canada and Northern United States, Lakers thrive in deep, cold, oxygen-rich waters, often found in large, deep lakes like the Great Lakes and Canada's Lake Superior. These fish are prized for their size, with some reaching over 100 pounds, making them a favorite among anglers. Lake Trout are identifiable by their slightly forked tail and light spots over a darker body, varying from green to grayish. They play a vital role in their ecosystem as top predators, feeding on smaller fish. Lake Trout are long-lived, some reaching 25 years, and they spawn late, contributing to their vulnerability to overfishing and environmental changes.
